Joining Freshman Academy - Fall 2009

With options ranging from science to humanities, and everywhere in between, Freshman Academy is collaborating with various university officials, academic departments, and resource administrators to develop exciting learning communities for fall 2009.

Things you should know about our fall program

As part of the continued refining of Freshman Academy, the connection between Freshman Academy learning communities and Residence Life, BYU’s on-campus housing, for fall 2009 will be less formal than in the past. Freshman Academy's learning community relationships with Honors, selected majors, and University Core requirements will remain intact. A variety of learning communities will continue to be available to students living both on-and off-campus. All learning communities will include peer mentor support to help students make connections with faculty, each other, and campus resources.

Fall 2009, Freshman Academy will offer a wide range of selections within two different learning community experiences, based on where students live. Additional information is added as it becomes available so check back often. Click on either of the following options for more details about our communities.

  1. Neighborhood Learning Communities enable students to attend Freshman Academy classes together and live in the same On-Campus Housing complex: Heritage Halls, Helaman Halls, or Wyview Park. While students may not necessarily live in the same apartment or on the same floor, they will still find opportunities to study together and learn from each other.
  2. Non-housing-Specific Learning Communities enable students to attend Freshman Academy classes together even though they may live in quite different housing configurations, such as on-campus housing, off-campus apartments, at home with parents, or elsewhere. Students in these communities commit to participate in community learning activities beyond the classroom.
  3. NOTE: You can click here to view the status of your submitted applications.

Freshman Academy is a popular first-year program that enrolls about 40% of the incoming class each year. However, participation in a learning community is by application only. Admittance is selective, and classroom space is limited. As part of the application process you may be asked to write brief responses to one or more questions about your interest in and commitment to a learning community and how you see it helping you be a successful student. For example, "How do you think your intended academic plans will be enhanced by participation in this learning community? Talk about what you hope to gain from this community, as well as what you can contribute to it."
