Freshman Academy students and peer mentors from the Humanities Learning Community recently spent a Saturday morning hiking the "Y." Lynette Yorgason, a peer mentor who went on the hike, said, “The purpose of the activity was for the students to do something very 'BYUesque' while getting to know each other at the same time.” Once the students and peer mentors reached the top, they held a devotional where students took turns expressing gratitude for various aspects of their lives. Yorgason said, “It was nice that we were able to show the spiritual side as well as the social side on the hike. I feel it was a great opportunity for the students to get to know each other, but also to see the peer mentors as fellow students.” Jolysa Sedgwick, another peer mentor, added, “Another interesting aspect of the hike was that students were able to encourage and support each other through the trail. Every time they rounded a switchback, you could hear the students say, ‘Come on, just one more. You can do it.’ Such principles in relationships, if mirrored with their schooling, will be incredibly beneficial.”
