Peer Mentor Role
Peer Mentors of Freshman Academy are expected to uphold certain responsibilities and standards within our program and the university. We expect you to be a shining example through various facets of your life, and outline other specific duties and expectations in the lists below.
Peer Mentor Responsibilities
Peer mentors are a valuable resource for faculty and students. Listed below are some of the peer mentor's responsibilities:
- live as an example of a disciple-scholar
- promote personal responsibility for learning
- attend at least one class with the assigned learning community
- build relationships with each student in the learning community
- identify, mentor, and document student needs, concerns, and plans
- facilitate faculty-student interaction through encouragement, support, and example
- demonstrate a positive attitude and encourage students in times of stress
- encourage group discussions and study groups for students in the learning community
- connect students to university resources
- coordinate service-learning activities
- actively support high community standards in classes and residence halls
- attend and actively participate in peer mentor meetings
- perform general office work (especially in spring, summer, and winter)
- write reports and document student contacts for FA administration
- attend public relation activities by invitation (Y Weekend Info-Fairs, NSO, booths, etc.)
Basic Expectations of a Peer Mentor
A peer mentor is expected to
- honor commitments made at the time of hiring
- spend time wisely and honestly
- adhere to Freshman Academy Dress and Grooming Standards
- attend weekly staff meetings or supervisory sessions
- maintain professional working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
- perform general work in the Freshman Academy office
- complete work as assigned
